Honorable Mention
A Tourist follows the Ho Chi Minh Trail
Marty Abuloc

reclaimed by jungle
for the most part
the visible
wide enough to fit
an oxcart
and the remains of
a Chevrolet Impala

five kilometers from the city
the trail is asphalted
ends abruptly into rice paddies

bones, flesh. fingers
of another time
that dug and formed with bare hands
and a wooden pick
lie forever dead in the trenches
unburied,

no ceremonies there
just the closing of eyes
after the pain of incoming firebombs

slightly off trail
five stone memorials
to vanguard women with a sideways smile
who died with a comb and a mirror
in each hand...

leave us alone joe
this is beauty you will never see.
